Dried Pigeon Peas (Toovar Dal)
   
   

Ingredients

1   cup pigeon peas (toovar dal)
1   cup chopped tomatoes
½  teaspoon chili powder (according to taste)
1   teaspoon salt (according to taste)
½  teaspoon turmeric powder
1   teaspoon cumin seeds
2   tablespoons oil or butter
2   tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
1   tablespoon chopped green pepper  (optional)
     pinch of asafetida
     6-7 cups water
   

Step 1
In a 4-quart glass bowl, wash pigeon peas (toovar dal). Add 5 cups water, salt and turmeric, cover and cook for 30 minutes.
  

Step 2
Remove from microwave, add 2 cups water, mix well and cook again for 20 minutes.

In a 2-quart glass bowl, combine the remaining ingredients except chopped coriander leaves and ..
  

Step 4
..cook for 5 minutes to make a tomato paste.
  

Step 5
Mix the tomato paste into pigeon peas (toovar dal).
  

Step 6
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve warm with rice.
